Newsletter Exclusive: Licensing Cars Like Guns: A Flawed Comparison That Misses the Point

I was shocked to recently come across an editorial from German car publication Auto Bild which likens a driver’s license to a gun license. In it, the author argues that modern cars have become too powerful, constituting an extreme risk to society at the hands of young men.

That’s right, he specifically singles out males from the ages of 16-25, citing German government statistics about their being involved in serious crashes at a disproportionate rate. I’ve seen crash data from quite a few sources before and know if you start digging through all of it, some rather uncomfortable associations beyond that can be made (if you know, you know).

The author talks about a fatal crash involving an 18-year-old male driver behind wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S. With the powerful, heavy performance vehicle, he hit a van and killed a father on foot in Hamburg, making it a tragic situation. But he makes a logical leap after drumming up the emotions, and that’s where I take issue with his stance.Instead of just focusing on the drivers, the author lays the blame on the tool itself.

That’s right, he blames modern cars and how they’re just too powerful. He even laments how with the advent of EVs vehicles are becoming even more performance oriented. It’s the classic case of shifting the focus from personal and societal responsibility.

The guy does mention in passing that pressure on social media to show off reckless driving stunts helps fuel incidents like the one he cites. But the main thrust of his argument is that powerful cars and young men’s access to them is ultimately to blame.Likening driving a powerful car to carrying a firearm is an interesting approach. While I agree that vehicles can be used as weapons and obviously are dangerous, even deadly when abused, they’re a necessary part of society.

Whenever someone starts talking about slapping big restrictions on access or use, not only do I get totalitarian vibes, I wonder what the economic and social price would be paid as a result.Instead, I think as a society, not as a government, we all need to discourage the reckless use of cars and encourage responsible habits. The problem is plenty of drivers of all ages tend to engage in dangerous activities while behind the wheel, especially driver distraction.

That needs to change.
